Q. Are the items water resistant?

Waterproof is an illegal and misused term: No watch is fully 100 percent waterproof.

  • A watch bearing the inscription "water-resistant" on its case back can handle light moisture, such as a rainstorm or sink splashes, but should not be worn swimming or diving. If the watch can be submerged in water, it must state at what depth it maintains water-resistance, i.e. 50 meters (165 feet) or more on most sport watches. Below 200 meters, the watch may be used for skin diving and even scuba diving depending upon the indicated depths. Sometimes water-resistance is measured in atmospheres (ATM), which is equal to 10 meters of water pressure.

Watches come in different water resistant depths and diver's depths:

  • Water resistant—Will withstand splashes of water or rain but should not be worn while swimming or diving.
  • Water tested to 50 meters (165 feet)—Suitable for showering or swimming in shallow water.
  • Water tested to 100 meters (330 feet)—Suitable for swimming or snorkeling.
  • Water tested to 150 meters (500 feet) — Suitable for snorkeling.
  • Water tested to 200 meters (660 feet)—Suitable for skin diving.
  • Diver's to 150 meters—Meets ISO Standards and is suitable for scuba diving.
  • Diver's to 200 meters—Meets ISO Standards and is suitable for scuba diving.

Q. What is meant by automatic, chronograph, and quartz?
  • Automatic, or self-winding, means the watch has a mechanical self-winding mechanism which allows it to run on its own. The advantage is evident: no batteries are required. They are also the signature of quality and Swiss mechanical watches are well known for their engineering genius.
  • Chronographs are the little dials (or 'clocks') which appear within the watches themselves and are always fully functional on our watches. Mechanical chronographs are complicated and Ollech & Wajs chronographs are highly regarded and value for money. They are normally used as stopwatch timers.
  • Quartz means the watch runs on a battery. They are accurate time pieces but cheap to manufacture. There is no craftsmanship involved with a battery watch, they are mass produced and these days most are made in Asia .

Q. Why does my automatic watch stop or lose time?
When you first receive your automatic watch you need to wind it before wearing it. If you wear it everyday, it will continue to wind itself on your wrist when you move around and walk. If you stop wearing it for more than approximately 2 days, the watch will need to be reset, but will then automatically wind itself once you start wearing it again. Your watch doesn't keep time if you don't wear it constantly. If your Automatic watch is losing or gaining time in a 24 hour period the watch needs to be adjusted. Any local jeweler can service these watches.

Q. What is a unidirectional bezel?
Often the bezel (the top ring on the case) serves to record additional data and can often move in different directions to provide a number of functions. A unidirectional bezel only turns one way to prevent a false maneuver. This is particularly important if the watch is used to measure diving times as even if the bezel is knocked or moved it will simply indicate it will simply indicate the diver has less air or decompression time rather than more. All Ollech & Wajs divers' watches are fitted with unidirectional bezels.

Q. Why is one watch more expensive than another?

A good watch is first of all one which is appealing.

Generally, mechanical watches, by nature of their movements, are more costly than quartz watches. Beyond this, there are a number of factors that affect the cost of watches.

In very carefully made movements, all parts, whether functional or not, are finished with great care. All steel components are polished; bridges are decorated and chamfered; all parts are of the highest quality and undergo stringent tests; in short, the manufacturing standards are extremely high. These high standards apply to all Ollech & Wajs watches
